My name is Joan and I am the mother of an athletic daughter, Mary, who loves playing sports.

I encouraged her to play sports from an early age, for all the reasons we love sports: to have fun, be part of a team, build strength and skills, learn discipline, commitment, good sportsmanship and leadership.

Her anxiety would show up the day before a game. She could barely eat, grunted responses when anyone in the family tried to talk to her and getting to sleep was always a struggle.

The day of, she would pace back and forth until it was time to leave and on the drive over she would bite her nails and not say a word.

Once we got to the stadium, she would run to the bathroom and sometimes throw up before stepping on the field. As this continued, it affected her performance.

Her coach had a talk with me and warned that if Mary did not “get over” her fears she would lose her starting position.

She was devastated.

And so was I…

I Knew There Had To Be A Better Way!

I was totally overwhelmed trying to figure out how I was going to help her relax before the game as her coach suggested.

I was extremely frustrated that most parenting books main advice was to get them to “tell themselves they are a winner.”

I was disappointed by the promise that if she could just visualize herself winning this would all go away.

None of these methods worked for Mary. In addition, none of the sports psychologist or experts in the field seemed to have a better approach or solution.

I remember at one point feeling so discouraged and inadequate as a parent that I considered having her quit. But one thought kept coming back to me: “If she quits now all the positive lessons she learned from playing sports will be lost and this fear might haunt her in other areas of her life.”

Modern sport psychology teaches you to “block out” distraction and “get used” to those pressure

Dear Craig,

I wanted to drop you a quick note to thank you for helping me turn my game around. I had the athletic down but I didn’t have my thoughts in control.

WHAT IS MENTAL TOUGHNESS?

What’s mental toughness to me? It’s a very important part of sports; I’d say it’s about 50% of the battle. I was searching for something to help me with my thoughts because I used to think negatively and barely have any confidence, but when I ran into these tapes I knew they would help me. They taught me so much about being mentally positive and what I could do to help my play. The tapes even told me stories of professional athletes that had my same problems and what they did to solve it or that were super mentally tough. These tapes are so good I’d recommend them.

WHAT WERE YOU LIKE BEFORE?

Before these tapes, I used to feel like I was about to give a school class presentation, I got super flush and nervous before a game. I had an overwhelming feeling and pressure that I had to be perfect. I was so hard on myself and I couldn’t get the little mistakes out of my head. Now I’m a positive and confident player thanks to my mentally tough mind. Also now if I make a mistake, I bounce back, not letting it affect me. These tapes also taught me about my power brain. My power brain is the part of my brain that tells me what to do. So before games I think back to some stuff I did very well and told my power brain to duplicate it. I’ve learned that you can’t get mad at what you can’t control like the refs or weather, you just got to go and give it your all because the more you put into your sport, the more you get out.

HOW DID THIS PROGRAM CHANGED YOU?

There are a lot of things that stood out to me, but this one story that these tapes shared really hit me. Doctors used to think that it’s physically impossible to run a mile in less than four minutes, but this kid proved them wrong and ran a mile in less! Remember you can do the impossible. This message was very important to me. Also another thing that helped me the most was the rubber band method, which is where you wear a rubber band or a hair tie on your wrist and whenever you say something negative in your head you snap yourself and it hurts just enough to have you learn not to put yourself down like that. This helped so much and I used to not even realize that I was putting myself down, but now whenever I say negative stuff I realize and fix it.

If you have an athlete playing sports, I’m sure you have gotten an earful of advice from experts, coaches and books on the mental side of the game.

The problem is many so called experts are missing the key element that could make all the difference to your child.

But what’s behind those promise? Let’s take a look:
 
  • If you go with the expert advice, it is generally geared toward professional athletes and does not deal with their core emotional issues.
  • If you go with the coach’s advice, they use what has worked for them and a few “star” athletes on the team, but it may not work for your child.
  • If you buy them a mental toughness book – good luck trying to get them to read it. Teens are busy enough these days.
  • If you give up, you’re playing Russian roulette with your child’s long-term self esteem.

In the past, parents had little choice. They looked for another team or coach, took them to a sports psychologist or watched their kid drop out entirely filled with regret and remorse.

I purchased the Mental Toughness Academy program and reviewed it for my son. He has been using the training with great zeal. He especially likes goal setting and visualization.

Being new to a competitive team, he does not get much playing time. He would squander his 10-20 minutes without “cause,” but this now it is different. He wants to make an impact in the short amount of time he has when he does play.

He realized that he needed to be deliberate and that his opportunities to score were limited. He also needed to make sure every time he got the ball to make it count. I work with almost five hundred students per year having set up programs during the day at two high schools in Sarasota, Fl. Test anxiety is my biggest challenge. After succumbing to the pressure, the kids believe they are not good test takers, even those with high GPA's.

I coach the South African U16 & SA U19 Netball teams & opened my own netball academy. We spoke maybe 5-6 months ago over the phone in regards to my 10 year old son who was seriously injured riding his motocross bike and wanted to quit riding. Well I’m happy to say that he made the decision himself back around mid-January to start riding again, he said that he missed it too much and wanted to start riding.
