Coach Mike Tully from Total Game Plan has studied peak performance for three decades, first as an international sports writer and then as a championship coach. Here is what he has to say about skill acquisition and improvement.
1. Need The Motivation To Attend To Task
It is harder to work on the things you are not good at — to get out of your comfort zone. Great performers are always uncomfortable in their practice.
It takes fire to do something uncomfortable. ” Comfort is the cemetery of the soul” – we are not here on the planet to be comfortable.
2. Practice Design
Your activity must slightly advance your skills at every practice
i.e. start with 4 foot putts and then go to 5
3.Get Feedback
For instance if you are a golfer and you are hooking every ball – that tells you something. Videotape yourself, get your stats, or have your coach give you feedback.
4. Do It All The Time – Repetitions
Practice is exhausting, so only do it for only 1 to 2 hours per day.
Recovery is important — it makes us stronger and able to build back up. The brain and mind work the same way.
Areas Important For Recovery:
1. Sleep – consolidates learning
2. Breath
3. Looking up to get perspective
