So what is “Mental Toughness” anyway and why do you need it? I believe Mental Toughness is when you are Confident, Focused,

Determined and Resilient…Even Under Pressure.

mentally toughLots of athletes exhibit some of these traits, some of the time, but very few exhibit them ALL of the time.

Now most people think Tiger Woods is the epitome of Mental Toughness, right?  He certainly has talent, determination, focus and confidence, but he’s missing one important aspect of being mentally tough.

RESILIENT UNDER PRESSURE

As far as I can see, since his personal troubles became public, Tiger does not seem to be bouncing back.

On the other hand take another athlete known for mentaltoughness, Lance Armstrong.  He survived testicular cancer and then went on to win the Tour de France seven times!

In his biography, he said,  “I remember trying to ride my bike at first and watching fifty year old ladies pass me up.”

This taught Lance humility, along with having to deal with the pain and suffering from his treatments.

Luckily Lance never gave up.  After going into remission, he dubbed himself a “cancer survivor”, rather than a “victim” and
went right back to training again.

So what is the difference?  Both Tiger and Lance were both dealt major setbacks, but Lance knew what to say and how to talk to himself when thingsmentally tough didn’t go the way he planned.

“Pain is temporary. It may last a minute, or an hour, or a day, or a year, but eventually it will subside and something else will take its place. If I quit, however, it lasts forever.”

The good news is that you too can learn how to be resilient under pressure and bounce back from anything – even an injury!
